Incumbents are typically assigned to a particular area of the City in which they perform patrol, traffic enforcement and investigative duties. Officers may be assigned special projects on an on-going or short-term basis (i.e. DARE, crime prevention, investigations etc.). The work performed involves a considerable risk to personal safety and requires quick judgment and decision making when determining appropriate action to take in a given situation. While much of this work is performed independently and without the immediate presence of a supervisor, incumbents are required to draw upon their extensive training and the procedural guidelines, mandates and laws governing an officer's response and conduct when determining the appropriate action to take in a particular situation. This is a single level classification. It is not part of a series. Successful performance in this class may qualify an individual for consideration for promotion to the Police Sergeant class.
